At 10 weeks how do I tell a BCM from a BSL pullet? I have many black pullets with red streaks showing in their chest and or neck. I know the people I got the eggs from had a diverse mix of hens including lots of BCM and BR hens with a non-barred roo. Having both is likely. I would probably keep the Marans hoping for darker eggs, but weather may force me to choose before they lay.

Also, none of the eggs they came from were super dark. In general, if a Marans pullet comes from a not very dark shell, is it likely that she won't lay dark eggs?

You all have been great! Thank you for your help!

1. What color was their rooster
2. A non barred rooster mixed with barred hen will make black females and barred males
3. Unless they had roosters and hens of the same breed all your chicks are just barnyard mixes

Ya, it'd really help to know what the rooster was.
If he had yellow shanks then so will his BR offspring while his BCM offspring will have white.
Ya, not likely the BCM pullets will lay eggs darker then what they hatched from. If the rooster wasn't a marans then they'll probably not even lay eggs close to what they hatched from.

I wish I could describe the roo! My husband and I both saw it and we're amazed at how beautiful it was. However, we can't agree on any aspect of the details...even size. I thought it was very large, he thinks it was rather small. Good thing it didn't commit a crime. Obviously we would make horrible eyewitnesses.

No. He had lots of colors. Todd said the rooster was a mix himself. He wasn't sure what the mix contained. The girlfriend had marans hens that she bought and I saw several barred hens. None of his eggs will be true anything. I'm just trying to sort the potential traits they got from their mothers.

Depending on what breed mix the father is will be everything, if you don’t know then we have no way of helping you
