I purchased 2 Black Jersey Giants, now 14 weeks who are being raised with a EE the same age. I know the EE will be fully grown & ready start on layer feed in about 6 weeks but the BJG's are slow growers that will not be fully grown until their 2 yrs old & will probably not start laying until the 1st of January (I have 5 EE pullets 2yr -1yr laying so no egg shortage).
I introduced them & their EE "clutch mate" to the 5 EE pullets & put them in the coop 2 weeks ago & while the 3 of them keep mainly to themselves I've had no "pecking order" problems but then the 5 older EE's really don't have a pecking order that I've ever noticed.
My question is since their slower growers who will need nutrients while their growing & will start laying late how long should I keep them on the grower feed before switching them to layer feed? They're not yet interested in any of the treats I give to my EE pullets (yogurt, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, pumpkin guts, bananas, red seedless grapes, etc). I've tried Google for info but all I get is info on the history of the BJG - no info on how to raise them.
Their beautiful, smart birds w/ great personalities, their so black they have a green sheen to their wings & will actually let me pick them up even though their not doing the "pet me squat" like the EE's, I hope to get more in the future.
