Black mass

No rooster here.
Another pic
Already groened this much in 4 days, after removing a golf ball size over the weekend.
Would this be contagious to other birds? They are contained in a covered run.

Could she have been attacked by a predator and this is an abscess that formed? Is there any way that you could take her to a vet? I don’t think that is anything infectious to other chickens, but she needs to have the wound debrided and cleaned out, possibly also having antibiotics.

Thanks. No predators. Have a fenced covered run, predator proof. Only thing that passes is the occasional mouse.

I am making calls. No vets around do chickens. I will see further away.

It does look like an abscess or at least infected. Maybe debried it the best you can, treat it topically with something from the feed store and see if feed store has any antibiotics that are safe to give to chickens. I would do this if i cannot find a vet. At least you have did your best. please keep us updated. My medical knowledge is in humans not chickens.

Hi. I found a hard mass on the back on my cream legbar. She is 2 years old.
It was hard as a rock, smelled like poop.
I soaked her in Epsom and work my way around the base. It was really stucked to her. She did.not bleed, bit the skin was a little raw and macerated underneath.
I have a picture of the thing i removed cracked opened.
I can't believe it is poop. She roosts at night. She is at the.bottom of thr pecking order, but no recent injury, no blood.
No mites.
Eating well. Acting normal.

That looks like a scab full of pus and if it's not poop (it doesn't look like poop) and it's smelly, that would indicate infection.
