Black scabs on butt? Product to heal them?

Hi Folks,

I have 9 assorted laying hens who are about 10 months old. While they were cooped up inside for the winter, they did a lot of pecking - at each other. Several of the hens have the feathers on the top around the base of their tail pecked off. Many more also have the soft little downy feathers on their butts pecked - down below and around their vents.

What's worrying me is that it now looks like at least two of my hens are having their bare (already pecked) butts pecked some more - they have sores that look to be bloody and scabbed over (black in color)

I went to the local farm store, expecting this to be a common problem, but they said they had nothing for this issue.

I thought I'd read on this forum previously that people said to use Blue Kote for this, but when I picked up the Blue Kote can it had a warning not to use the product on horses intended for food... If it's not safe for horses intended for food, how can it be safe to spray near the vent of a laying hen when I eat the eggs?

Is BlueKote the right product? Is there something else I can do, aside from isolating the offending pecker, which I think I also read somewhere...

thanks,
KD
