Ok. I'm a newbie here. I want to get laying pullets which can be used for meat later. I'm just wondering which breed to start with? I don't even mind having both. Just looking for suggestions.

Thank you to all in advanace!!

My guess would be that since sex links put so much of their energy/nutrients into egg production they don't develop a very meaty body, even if they're a cross between 2 dual purpose breeds. This would be especially true of hatchery sex links since the breeding stock has been selected specifically for egg production. Staying with purebred dual purpose breed may give you fewer eggs, but more meat -- though with some breeds the egg production will still be very good. I'm getting probably 5-6 eggs a week from most of my Delaware hens, and they're all fairly stocky girls (unlike the "meatless" sex links).
