I just picked up my 17 week old pullets yesterday and noticed that one of the BSL's has black legs and the other has brownish ones. Is this common?
In picture the one on right facing camera has the brown legs, she also has alot of red running throughout her chest (as pix shows) her back and sides are typical of a BSL. The other; head up and to the left of first bird mentioned has black legs, you can see them under her (there's a BA in front of her making it a weird looking photo). She does not have nearly the amount of red on her chest as the other.

That looks normal to me. BSL are crosses with one parent (for sure) having yellow legs. She is either having some really bad fadding or she didn't catch the gene as well as the others. Ideal uses drawing of chickens and their drawing shows yellow legs.

the one in question. She could have had darker legs as a chick then they could of faded out some, where the yellow will bleed through and make her legs look brown. But fading in young chickens is not very common, but does happen.

I have 3 BSLS and two have single combs and one has a rose comb. I think the characteristics just vary with the parents. Someone on the forum suggested that my rosecombed one had a dominique for a mother instead of a barred rock.

Thanks for the responses. They are both very pretty young girls and I'm happy to have them both.
NOW get to laying girls

I would think that when you are crossing breeds you can expect some variations in coloring. Look at their feathering, some are light and some are darker. I think you could expect the same kind of variance in the leg color too.
