We have sumatras and have crossed them to EE's and phoenix and have gotten birds with more of a mulberry face. I have noticed with the blue sumatras that their skin is more purple than the black, and all of the splash colored sumatras we have gotten have red faces with some black spots.
When we had black araucanas we brought in a new line with hatching eggs and got one bird with a tail that looked just like a sumatra. We didnt get any females from that breeder but we also got one tufted rumpless cock bird from that breeder and always kept him in the shed. When we put him in an outdoor pen the second year his face turned black. When we asked the breeder they said that they bred in a sumatra for better color or something about 6 generations before that and the dark face still showed up.
