Mind you, I do NOT like snakes... but I usually always tried to avoid harming black snakes when I was growing up in Illinois. A black snake will kill copperheads. I've never seen a spot with lots of black snakes that had a more than the very rare copperhead visit.
I am worried too. We have killed two black snakes so far this month. Both were robbing the nests of wild birds around our house. The first time it was a blue-jay's nest, the second time was just a few minutes ago and it was an eastern phoebe (flycatcher) nest. I am so upset about the poor birds who just lost their baby!
I am also worried about my chickens. They are almost 6 weeks old and just moved outside to their new coop & run!
*Update- We went back out and the baby bird was scooting herself along on the deck. My husband lifted her back up to the nest and she hopped back in. I hope she will be ok!
