I've got something im curious about and if anyone has the same "issue" or any info i will appreciate it, thanks in advance!
So, I love giving my crew new food to discover, and *i think* their fav is and the fruit&worm treats by the brand impeckables at tractor supply...aside from doritos, by accident lol. Its a meal worm and seed/fruit mix, and i noticed the mealworms were apparently poppin', as they are the first to disappear. Also, i LOVE digging up worms for them, they literally wait for my next move when i have the shovel, and i think they enjoy me joining in! However, the only one who wont show any interest in ground worms is my choc orp hen, squirt, which stumps me because shes the one eating a majority of the mealworms from the treats... i will say though, yesterday she finally acted like the other 2, racing to beat the others and get the worms i dug up. Normally, she would jump on my back to hang out while me and the other 2 did the blue-collar work, maybe shes on the same boat now.
Long story short, i got them some black soldier fly larvae, royal wing brand @ TSC, actually cheaper than anything packaged to target chicken owners...but guess what? They wont eat them! Im not exactly sure if theirs really any reasoning to this, but i see other people's chickens go ballistic for them! Now im over here pampering the wild birds that visit us, but even then i dont know if they're eating the soldier larvae or not. Never being coerced into buying a bug in a bag again! (prolly a lie)

Much longer than i anticipated, but hopefully yall can enjoy reading about my struggles lol! Have a blessed tuesday!

I find from the early days of chicks (8-10 days old), I purchased the very small live meal worms for treats. You can purchase 500 to 1000 fairly cheap. Once they figure out what they have in front of them, its all out charge! My chicks are now 8 weeks old and I have some one inch mealies that I treat them to every couple of days. It works well on training them to return to the coupe in the evening.

Be aware that all mealworm, living or dead are from China and are fed stuff that is very questionable. Most BFSL are too alough there are a few brands that are US grown bit are $$.

Some birds just don't like bsfl, my first group of pullets didn't like them, only one of the 4 would unenthusiastically eat them, the other 3 wouldn't touch them and never did. Every flock is a little different and individual birds differ too and have their own likes and dislikes. In any case, bslf aren't essential to their diet so I wouldn't worry about it

I bought a big box of bsf larvae and my girls are completely uninterested. I'm going to keep tossing some out there and hope they develop a taste for them.

So many questions: You are training them with more live ones or dried ones? And where do you get the mealworms. And do you have to give them to the chicks all at once or can you store them somehow?

Mealworms aren't worms; they're insect larvae.

So the worms that you dig up (presumably earthworms) are completely unrelated, because they're not insects.
