Do black Swedish drakes have a greenish cast to their head and purple in their body feathers? I have two drakes - one is black as described and the other is more of a slate/dark gray and his head is not turning greenish. I was told they were blue Swedish when I bought them as ducklings and now I'm wondering if the one is a cayuga mix? Here's a pic - what do you think?

The gray one is considered a blue sweedish and the other is a black sweedish. The blacks are more colorful and nice looking ducks. Here is a picture of a couple of my black sweedish.

OH GOOD! Thank you! I've tried searching pics but none showed a green head so I wasn't sure what I had. When I bought my girls, I was told they were blue Swedish too. They are still young, but since they look nothing like the boys, I'm not so sure (also in the pic). ?

Yes the black swedish drakes do have green heads and also a purple sheen to them. I actually have a black swedish that comes from a blue swedish x with a khaki or runner but he looks purebred. I guess the blue swedish genes really dominate over everything else.

I bet your girls are considered a splash sweedish. I do have a couple blue sweedish hens but they look just like your blue sweedish drake. Sweedish ducks come in Blue, Black, Silver, and Splash - so I bet they are Splash.

Thanks for the info and your ducks are beautiful!! My girls are still young and their feathers are changing daily. I have one that I thought was a white crested but she's looking a little "splash" these days too. Time will tell. Thanks for setting my mind at ease!

Silver and splash are the same color in Swedes. Looking at your pic, I see three splash, one blue, and one black Swede (and the Mallard drake and the crested cutie).

Enjoy them! Swedes are the best!

Nice ducks! I wondered about the splotches vs SQ. It really doesn't matter to me because I don't plan to show them, but I think he's beautiful

They are still very young and just hitting puberty, so maybe that's why his head is still green this late in the year.

Isn't my little Pierre cute? She's the crested. Yes, she! I named her before I could tell and it just stuck.

Like the pics of the pens too. I will have to build breeding pens for mine. Sure don't like the idea of keeping them penned up but I'm planning to sell ducklings in the spring. Need to find a girlfriend for my Rouen though or he will be very lonely

He is absolutely gorgeous - wish I had a better pic of him.

What would the babies look like if I bred the crested to the Swedes?
