Black Walnuts appeared in my duck house ?!!

Hi: I spent all weekend cleaning out and winterizing my duck house... it looked great, all clean and warm and fluffy new bedding and hay...It was pouring rain when I got home last night, so I just did a quick check on the ducks. Tonight when I got home from work I found this... Something has placed a bunch of black walnuts in the ducks house... I'm wondering if anyone has had this experience in the past, I'm guessing either chipmunk, rat or squirrel???

Squirrels have been hiding them everywhere here in Tennessee, I see them hidden everywhere at work

Squirrels, or do you have kids? I remember Collecting walnuts when i was young and putting them in the flowerbed, Mom was not happy when they started growing!

Squirrel or child. Best find out how it's getting in and stop that up, keep rats out.

I'm going to set up a camera if the rain ever stops and see if I can find whats putting them in there - I'm wondering if (whatever it is) is going to try to spend the winter living with my ducks.

I know, that's what I'm afraid of... We found a rat in our barn last weekend...Don't need it in my duck house.

Yes, I agree. We bought some rat traps which they have managed to avoid very nicely. I am not thrilled about rat poison because I have 4 dogs that I'm afraid would get a hold of the sick/dead rat and eat it, or at least 'de-fluff' it like a toy.

Definitely don't use rat poison if you have dogs.
What did you bait the traps with? Peanut butter usually works. It may also be worth trying a more unusual type of trap in case they're used to one kind. Heck, even a cage trap, if you have a humane way to dispatch them once caught. Drowning is NOT humane.
