Hi there

I have some beautiful quality black Wyandotte bantam pullets/cockerels that I'm planning on selling. They're chicks out of show stock. I'm unsure what to price them at so was wondering if someone could give me an idea?

They're still young so I'm not sure if they're going to be show quality or just breeding stock.

Thanks

How old are the chicks? If they are a few days old, $7-$10 a chick would probably be good. Older chicks around 8 weeks old could go up in price since you've put more feed and time into them. Chicks that are several months old I'd probably price at about $15-$20. Birds that are 5+ months old and have no disqualifications are usually sold for $25 each or in pairs for $50.

Of course, these prices will vary according to several factors, including these:

  • Location. In your area, if there are a lot of 4Hers or people looking to show, you may be able to sell at a higher price. In areas where most people just want backyard or barnyard fowl, you may have a hard time selling them for the same price.
  • Their parents' show records. You say that the parents are show-quality, but there is a difference between a 1st place hen and a Champion Bantam, for example. It's a great idea to show your birds so people can see what judges think of them. The more wins, the more likely they'll pay higher prices for he offspring (though, two great showbirds can produce poor quality offspring, so the parents are no guarantee).
  • Time of year. Some people can be more hesitant to buy birds later in the year, because they'll have to overwinter them/feed them for a while. Depending on the age of your chicks, they may or may not be able to be used as breeders this winter. People around now are usually looking for breeding age pairs for winter hatching.
  • Sex of the birds. You'll find that it is harder to sell cockerels than pullets. Lots of people will ask for trios or extra pullets because you don't need as many males as females. If you sell several pullets with each cockerel, eventually you'll end up with extra cockerels and no pullets to go with them. Sometimes it is a good idea to sell cockerels for a slightly lower price, especially if you just want to get rid of them.

To post photos, go up to the toolbar above your post while you're working on it (the same place you can changed alignment, underlines, and bolding of text). You should see a icon with mountains and a sun. On my computer it is next to the align-justified button and an insert video button. Click on that and it should let you upload photos to this post.

^Thanks for taking the time reply. :)

The chicks I'm looking to sell range between 2 months to 6 months of age. I have a few that are about a year old as well. One of my bantam hens is hatching them like crazy and I just found nine more yesterday.

Here is a sample of what some of my adult birds look like..I will take some of my young ones later this afternoon.
