I have 4 tom turkey that we are keeping as pets, they're about 6 months old now and free range with bantam chickens during the day, at night they (and a male guinea) reside in the chicken coop in their own section separate from the chickens.
2 of the turkey are acting strange- at first I thought they were cold (as its been cold here in maine and the coop was only 28 degrees the day I first noticed) so brought them inside in a dog crate and put heat on them.But it seems unrealated. One minute they are listless and squatting on the ground, or bearly hanging onto their perches, wings drooping and mouths gaping-- then they are up and pecking grass like everythings fine....I'v noticed it seems they come over to us when they are not feeling well and will just lay there looking at us as if they want help
we pick them up and they don't struggle or anything - while usually you can't catch the buggers unless theyget too close and are not paying attention. Theygenerally always follow us around but catching them is an effort and your likely to get a good laceration.
Over the past 3 days, they will be listless as above and other times they snap out of the listlessness when you grab for them, continue on their merry way acting normal, then a bit later they are down for the count. From what I am reading it seems it may be blackhead disease?? It seems they are eating less as well.... thier crops arent full like they usually are.They eat layeena layer pellets same as the chickens. But I have recently added scratch feed and some oats to their rations for the winter.
What will take care of black head if thats what they have? and what can I worm the whole flock with?? all I have for meds is Wazine and Sulmet....I need to change out the bedding in my entire coop and start treating with Sulmet as I got a sneezy hen from someoen this past spring and ever since there has been a sneeze here or there around the coop- but I have a coupel who seem to be pretty snuffley since the cold weather hit this past week and I want to rid it if its Coryza. Not sure what is available online or at feed store that will take care of Blackhead- and if the chickens need treatment as well....Anyone with some good advice?
And please don't recommend keeping them separate from chickens- I want them to free range happily, but I have 30 bantams that also free range in the 2 acre yard and no way to seaparate them. what can be done to maintain the health of all my birds??? It seems even if you keep a new bird by itself for a bit, it doesnt show symptoms until you stress it by putting it with the rest of the flock, by then its infected everyone. How can I routinely/successfully worm my birds and with what/how often? and what can I do to save my turkeys?
