Another post about my Weasly Burrowesque style coop.

Where to put the roosts?

so for the one night they had the existing cross bar which one chicken used the others slept on the floor and pooped every where there wasn’t straw. šŸ™„

after cleaning it out I will lay linoleum, put in nest boxes and sand barriers and sand.

some constraints back wall is original coop front and has ventilation all across from floor up to about 24 inches. Most will get blocked by nest boxes and when weather starts turning I will do some draft tests to see if it needs to be more shut off. Right now we have multiple 100degree days so more air the better. Likewise on original coop when I flipped the pitch of the roof it created triangle openings starting at 22in from floor to 34in at where original coop back connects tonew wing. This is where the crossbar is that chicken roosted On last night. I planned to eliminate it. Though she actually positioned herself pretty close to vent triangle.

These vents are also a bit lower and I would consider blocking part of them off as well. Our winters are pretty mild a handful of just Below freezing Nights. We Can get a decent amount rain and wind. I went with idea that more ventilation was better because I can close vents off easier than creating more vents later.

new wing has ventilation all along top and around soffit. Lowest is 31 in from floor.

Plan was to put in 2 roost bars all the way across on inside stud at connection and at middle stud on new wing. See photo with drawing. The heights could be 12 in on back and 15 Front from human door perspective. I am going back and forth about different heights or same height.
There will be about 3in of sand on floor so roosts would be 9 and 12 in off sand.

These roosts would be at least 16 inches below a direct vent and 3-4 inches from any cross vent there would be just barely 12 in between roosts which is why I’m leaning toward varying heights to give more adjustment room chicken went on roost bar at 22 in level last night just fine.

There we have it. If you made it this far you deserve a medal. I welcome any advice including completely different arrangement of interior.

Second pic looks fine for roost height, should be higher enough that they won't sleep in nests. Same height would best, hopefully they have room to get up between them.
12" from walls and 18" between roosts.
What's the floor dimensions...and how many birds?
I wouldn't try to separate the sand area, just make the whole floor sand for sifting out poops(I assume).

We have 3 now but 6 is in future and 6 is max for regular flock.

The reason sand area is separated is to keep sand out of nest boxes and away from trap door.

It is just shy of 24 sq feet. Trap door takes about 1.5 sq ft. But then they can have 24/7 access to secure run below which is additional 26 sq ft.
2-3 Nest boxes + rollaway tray will be along back they have a 12x15 footprint each nest section is 12x12X12.

Why do think same height is best? I see a number of ā€œangle stackedā€ roosts.

18 inches between is going to hard to make do because It would put a roost Over the trap door
