Hi all,
Starting on the 11th, I noticed one of my Buff Orpingtons had been keeping her right eye shut and was less active than she used to be. Her eye looked fine at the time so I wasn't sure what was wrong exactly. I offered her extra water in case she was not drinking as much, and gave her various treats she liked (hard boiled egg, clovers, sunflower seeds, oats, etc.). She wasn't eating much, but she did eat a little bit each day.
Within a week she perked back up and seemed to be almost completely better. I was weaning her off the supplemental food and water. As of two days ago, her activity has decreased once again, and she spends much of her time standing in the shade, resting. I think she's been eating and drinking a little bit, I give her extra food and water to help her out.
Yesterday, I saw she had blood in her right eye, just in her iris. It was cloudy looking, probably because there wasn't much there. I gave her a mixture of coconut oil + black pepper + turmeric to reduce inflammation. She took about a half teaspoon of that. That night she didn't jump all the way to the roost to sleep, but instead slept on a black nester box that's lower to the ground.
I checked on her this morning and she was up and about, but now her right iris has a solid pool of blood at the bottom, sometimes covering a bit of her pupil, and her left iris is starting to show blood as well. There are no other symptoms besides her just resting a lot in the shade. Nothing respiratory, nothing like that. Her poop has been watery without much food, but she hasn't lost any weight. She is molting as of now but it is a gentle molt.
Besides what I'm doing now I'm not sure what else I can do. I couldn't find anything on this for chickens, but in people this is usually caused from injury during sports. Normally it heals on its own with rest and keeping the head above the body. There's also a minority of cases where they say medical attention is needed (?). There isn't a vet around me that takes chickens, they only euthanize them.
I think she may have had a head injury. Maybe she flicked her head against the wall at night. She likes to sleep next to a wall beam in the coop. There isn't much bedding as of now, about a half inch to an inch of sand depending on the spot.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
