Hi all,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but here goes...

Someone at my DHs work has a Dominecker Roo. He cannot find the food like the rest of the chickens can, only when he puts it down in front of him will he eat. He's worried that it might be blind. The eyes are open. I also think it's blind, but wanted to get some input. Any help is appreciated.

Thanx

Probably better to post in the diseases section, as you will get more response.
I have a hen that has become progressively blind in the past year. She appears to see shadows or have some peripheral vision in one eye. Her eyes are open and look clear, but are oddly placed and her pupils don't dilate and constrict with light like the the girls'. She will move in the direction of our voices, the other hens squawking, or the rattle of the jar with the treats.

She will free range, but frequently retreats to the coop, where she will locate and access the food and water because she knows where it is. If you have something in your hand, she can't find it and will peck the air. We have a little yogurt cup that we put some special treats and food in for her and put it right in front of her face and shake it and then she will eat. But sometimes she will back up and then miss the cup. She also can't make it all the way to the roost and sleeps on the poop board underneath, which is a larger flat surface.

Folks on here do have chickens with low vision or totally blind (as well as other problems). In my experience, blind chickens require a bit of extra attention to make sure then get enough to eat and drink, and that they are safe. We had a huge thunderstorm with wicked rain a week ago and I looked out and there she was in the middle of the yard disoriented. I had to run out, pick her up and put her into the covered run where they others had congregated.

Thanx, I reposted this under diseases.
