Blood in duck pen

I am raising my first set of Mallard ducklings. They are about 17 weeks old. I found a small pool of blood in the mud that they often drink water and forage in for worms/bugs. I have one girl and 3 boys. No one has any injuries that I can see. I have noticed my female and one of the males attempting to mate in the pool in the past week. Could this be related?
Any ideas on where this blood may have come from? It was very red, and a pool the size of the bottom of a sofa can (seems significant).

Are you sure it's blood? Water can leach through decomposing organic material in soil and leave small pools of reddish or reddish brown liquid.

You can’t always be see an injury you need to pick them up one by one and examine them.
