blood in poop

5 WK chicks, one with blood in poop. Where to look for a cause? What to do to cure. They are on med. food. Can't tell which one out of 13.

This web link was very useful for me when I saw some "abnormal" poop from my chicks. It's pictures of Normal and Abnormal poop. It doesn't list any remedies but you could at least use it to see if what your seeing in your birds is something to be more concerned about.

Sounds like it could be coccidiosis. From what i have read on this board, that would be the most likely cause. i just experienced it myself this morning with a group of my three month olds. Someone had blood in their poop, not sure which one. Treatment is Sulfadimethoxine 1 fluid ounce to 2 gallons of water. Provide this as the only source of water for six days. i'm going to treat all my flock as it's very likely that if one has it they all do.

Just to break down the dosage (since i had to do it), 1 fluid ounce = 2 Tablespoons. So for a one gallon water container you would add just one Tablespoon. If you are using the quart water container then you would add three 1/4 teaspoons full. Someone tell me if my math is off.

The sulfadimethoxine i have came from my vet's office and is a liquid in a one gallon bottle. If your feed store does not carry that, i think they would have a powder you could use.

The chick with the blood also may not be eating enough and therefore not getting the dosage from the feed. Try mixing starter crumbles with a bit of water and getting more into this one by dropper...

If you think it's cocci - and considering the age of your chicks, it very likely is - many here, including myself, would also recommend Corid/Amprolium instead of Sulmet. I've never used Sulmet, but i'm told that Corid seems to be a little better bet and a little easier on the intestines.
