Blood spot in the eggs

Hi I am new to this forum but I would greatly appreciate any help you can give to me. I have raised laying hens for several years now but this is the first time I have had bloody spots in my eggs. Part of the girls have always laid bad eggs but now they are all doing this. Can you please help me understand what they may be needing...Thank you Denise

The blood spot is from when the chicken was making the egg, a blood vessel popped. I had an egg the other day that had a string of blood in it...I couldn't eat that so I gave it to my dog. He was happy! The little blood spot is not bad, and can simply be taken out with the tip of hte knife.

I would put "blood spot" into the search engine here at BYC and see what you can find. It is very common, I think there is something that causes it (like some deficiency?), but cannot recall what at the moment.

Thank you all for your help. I know that this blood spots can be some what normal but what is concerning me is that out of 19 hens 19 of them are constantly laying almost 80% of all their eggs with blood in them. This is my first set of birds to do this. I am going to check on the Vitamin levels./...But of course I hate to say this but I really do not know what I am looking for...

That is a lot of spotty eggs! Imp's article was very good. Some questions for you:
I assume your hens are still young?
What is their diet, what percentage of diet is treats? I would cut out all treats that are not very nutritious, such as bread, rice, pasta, and corn scratch.
Is their layer ration very fresh? (not sitting around all winter)
Do they have lights on to stimulate laying?
What breeds do you have?

Do you have a rooster? Is a Rooster close by? Has a Rooster visited lately?
The reason I ask, is that a fertilized egg will have a tiny dot on the yolk that looks like blood. It is safe to eat a fertilized egg.
