Hello,

I've got some hens that I just got from a Hutterite farm. One laid a bloody egg today and now I've noticed she's got some stuff stuck on her bum. I've had these hens for about two weeks. They have straw for bedding and they are on regular grower ration because I have them with my younger flock of red Sussex chickens. I have several young roosters about two months old. I saw one rooster jump on one of the white hens but she pecked him away immediately. That might have been yesterday but I'm not sure. I haven't noticed any health problems since I got them, other the lack of feathers. Any help is greatly appreciated. If it's serious I can call the emergency number for our local vet but I would just like to know if it's serious.

Was the egg bigger? Try bathing her and seeing if that stuff comes off... and get a better look st her vent

No I think she's over a year old. I'll see if I can clean her up. They are very flighty and hard to catch, but I did it once! Hopefully I can do it again. I wasn't sure if I should try to wash it, so I'll let you know what I find. Thank you very much!

Well it seems to be just dried up blood and her egg opening looks swollen to me. Should I apply some type of salve? I've got one that we use for general cuts and scrapes. Here's a new picture too. I read in another thread that if it's broken blood vessels I should add some type of fat to their available food, like a wild bird suet?

Sometimes when they lay overly large eggs it will cause some problems like blood and such, personally I would apply something and just keep an eye on it.. your a good chicken mom!

Her vent looks swollen as if she either was egg bound, or could still be egg bound. She also could have suffered a prolapsed vent as well, where the red internal tissue protrudes outside. I would apply some honey, sugar, or hemorrhoid cream to the swollen area to help reduce swelling. Insert a finger inside to check for a stuck egg still inside. Probably, she has just laid a large egg today that might have been stuck for awhile, thus causing the blood. Her tail feathers have been stripped. Do you know if she is being feather picked, or maybe starting her molt?

Oh all my egg layers came that way from the commercial farm I bought them from. They're just starting to grow them back. I guess I kinda rescued them.
