Okay so assume cocci? Bloody droppings on the board this morning. Have no idea who they came from.

My flock ages between 6-10 weeks old. There are 23 mixed breeds (see signature). They are fed medicated purina starter. ACV every couple days, egg/yogurt/feed mash every 2 days. I change water 3 x/day and change out to sanitized waters and feeders a couple times a week. I also add 3 drops/gall bleach once a week inbetween santitizing.

NOT one single other symptom. Everyone is eating, drinking, pooping, clucking, pecking etc as normal. No one is overly tired or withdrawn or in anyway acting strange. I spend a couple of hours with them each day so can be sure of this. I like to handle them each day.

They are on pine shavings in their own coop, locked in at night and with access to coop/run (175 sq/ft covered, secure) during the day.

Here's what I did immediately. I had Sulmet here in my chick med box, made the 2 tb/gal and changed out all water. I made an applesauce/oatmeal/feed/yogurt mash and added bird vitamins too. Fed and watered them with this.

Made sure everyone ate, even had to hand feed the silkies so that they didn't get pushed out.

I have to run out for day camp so won't behome until later but am anxious about someone dying suddenly. Have I covered all my bases? And is Cocci always a death sentence or can they get over it, even if they have bloody stools and finally was there something I missed, a symptom?

Thank you and Thank you.

I had noticed something like that several weeks ago too with my chicks, but then started looking at the chicks in the other pens and noticed it was happening to them too. This was even going on in my indoor brooder, where those chicks had never even seen the ground. I then determined that it was something (one of the ingredients) that had been put into the Purina Starter / Grower feed that was causing it. It was just the way that whatever the ingredient was, was coming through on the other end after eating it! They never showed any symptoms of cocci (ruffled feathers, hanging head, closed eyes, withdrawn from the others), so that's how I determined it was the feed.

I think you have done the right thing with the Sulmet for good measure, but I truly don't think you have anything to worry about. It more than likely is something that was put into the feed and is coming out red. I sure wish I knew what in the world it is that Purina is putting into that feed!

No vitamins during Cocci treatment, not until you are sure it is gone. Mine had zero symptoms, zero access to other chicks or ground. The only thing I saw was a very little blood in a few poos. I started treatment right away just in case and still lost two. better to treat and be safe than sorry you waited.
edited to add-the mix you fed them is good as it reduces protein just leave out the vitamins.

Good to know on the vitamins. So far everyone is going about their business as usual. I wonder about the Purina. This is the middle of a 50 lb bag, shouldn't I have seen something earlier?

But oh so hoping that's what it is.

So assuming that they have cocci, and since no one has a symptom... how long does it usually take for them to die? I don't want to be morbid but I'm curious. AND if the treament works how will I be able to tell? Besides the obvious no one dies?

I was just down there for about 45 mins watching them and I don't see anyone who is out of the ordinary. It's hot in the sun today and I don't have alot of shade in the run so I scattered frozen water bottles in the hidey spots to give them some cool air.

What's the morbidity rate on this cocci?

I don't think many survive without treatment. Mine seemed healthy at start of treatment but went downhill fast, at deaths door within three days. The 2 I lost did not go easy or quiet. The first symptom was a little blood in poo then no symptoms for about 2 days after start if treatment and then puffed up, sleepy, not eating, pale babies. I think if it is cocci you would see more symptoms within a few days of bloody poo. Check against these pics. Maybe it was normal.

No bloody stools this morning and I searched the coop. Since yesterday morning I've started the sulmet in their water and gave them two feedings of the yogurt/oatmeal mash. I also added powdered milk to the dry medicated feed last night (that is still in the coop).

Still no signs of puffed feathers or sleepiness or any other irregular behavior.

So now do we just sit and wait?

since you have started treatment i would finish the course. no vitamins for 2 weeks after, just in case. I am not sure they should be on the med feed at same time as sulmet as they are 2 diff meds. will search and see if I can find. I treated 4 cages of birds just in case even though only one had bloody poo. it didn't hurt them and I felt better.
