I found a bloody splat of poop up on the top of the nesting boxes this morning. Definitely from my little red girl (who was up there at the window waiting for me to come let her out) as she also had some splatters on her feathers. She was totally normal, chased me over to her little pen on the other side of the yard and dove into her feed as always. She just started laying 2 weeks ago and has been laying "regularly" (got an egg yesterday!). She is about 21 weeks old now. I did not notice anything off in her or in the others that stayed in the coop. They have all been free ranging together for a couple hours at night and have been eating up a storm, as always.

Is bloody poop ever anything but Cocci? I will run home at lunch to recheck on everybody but won't have time to swing by TSC to pick up anything until after work.

If not, what is usualy sold at TSC? I saw only this on their website:

http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp...10551_10001_43406_-1______?rFlag=true&cFlag=1

Not sure if that link will work. If not, go to tractor supply website and search for sulmet. The pack on the left.

Anyone?

Yes, capillaria is a definite cause of bloody droppings. That is why it is best to have a fecal check done to see what it is you're trying to treat.

Time is wasted by guessing and automatically assuming its cocci because of the appearance of blood.

I checked on her at lunchtime and she was still bright and happy and had normal poop in her pen.

On second thought (and look at the poop), I wonder if she got into some Polk/Poke berries. I have caught a few of those around the perimeter of the property and there are a bunch right behind the chicken coop where this chicken sometimes hangs out (when she escapes the pen

I think that could cause the same "looking" poop. I am going to get the medicine to have on hand and just keep an eye on her for now.

I know polk/poke berries are poisonous to us and other animals but wild birds eat them just fine (I know because I find the red/purple poop everywhere)......where do chickens fall in this spectrum?

Well its been 4 days and not only is she still acting normally (huge appetite, eating, drinking, laying eggs) but her poops have been normal colored since then. I think she got into some sort of berries or flower buds that stained everything.....who knows! I have plenty of poke/polk around the yard, so maybe it was that?

i'm raising chicks for the first time ever, and today one hatched. it was exciting for a few minutes and then when we went back to check on it it had some sort of bloody, membraneous thing dragging from behind. if we didn't know better we would say it looked like an organ. whatever it is is trailing blood all over the incubator. is this normal. we are all very concerned.

Oh My!! I'm not laughing AT you dear. I'm laughing WITH you! Because let's face it, bloody stools in our feathered friends is never a laughing matter.

But I laugh because I had a similar incident last year with the end of the season beets from the garden. You know the kind...they've gone too long in the ground and are tough and woody, but my girls just positively POUNCE on them whenever they are offered such delicacy's.

The following day, every roosting spot in the coop had purple red droppings. At first I thought something was terribly wrong. Then the husband reminded my that I had completely overindulged my girls with beets! Your story of the Polk/Poke berries brought it all back. It's moments like those that I feel so silly!

Kassandra, you should repost this with it's own subject line.
The babies sometimes have a little blood from the membrane, but its not alot. They do absorb the yolk into their bellybutton and it closes up when they hatch. It could be that it didnt close up.
I would take the baby and put a tissue on it and try to see if the thing is just membrane or the belly button didnt close properly.
if its not that, take a picture and post it here, but make a new subject with a subject like " Help! Chick trailing blood!"

good luck with that...

The bloody poo thing has been a problem on and off here. Ive treated for many things and event hough my sample came back OK...but then one hen suddenly pooed out a bunch of dead round worms...hmmm...then blood...so, Ive wormed and treated for coccidiosis....
well, sometimes there is a bit of blood on a very big egg.
And then my parrots pooed red today...and I remembered the cherries!! hah...I hate feeding them red peppers because of that. I always do a double take.

Im seeing a bit of orangy stringiness in the chicken poo (I should write a book about chicken poo, actually...) and I am worming again with wormazole tonight or tomorrow...but much of what I worry about is probably due to them free ranging and what they eat.
I just gave them leftover Chinese food minus the meat, and lettuce and cereal that had gone stale...lucky chicks!!

Well I am still getting reddish poop here and there so I am starting them on corid treatment as of today .

I put 2 teaspoons per gallon of water starting today. How many days do I do this?

All of the chickens are acting fine still. I think it is my red girl just judging by where the red poop is, but not sure. As I have added the 7 x 12 week olds from the brooder into the coop area, I am treating everyone.

I have searched but see conflicting times for treatment. Anyone?
