so I am new to chickens I have had my girls for 3 weeks 20 BSL 6 RIR, yesterday moring I noticed 1 poop that had some frank red blood, within a few hours there were more poops with blood in it, I went to the vet and they sent me to a large animal vet when I got there the lady was very ignorant I told her I needed Amprol for my chickens and she refused to sell it to me saying they didn't have a relationship with my chick's, and the couldn't just sell it to me. I drove an hour to get there so in the parking lot I broke down in tears thinking my whole flock is going to be dead before I can treat them. I have called all over today is a holiday no place open and the local Co-op gave me Oxysol-62.5 to give to them they said it works but I'm skeptical.

Help Please I don't know what to do, chicks are running around eating and drinking but still noticed a bloody poop this morning. they have had medicated water since yesterday afternoon

Yes I'm sure it's blood very bright red new blood. Thank You I'm hoping someone can advise me what to do or if the Oxysol is good for Cocci

I've got an 8 week old chick with coccidosis too - woke up yesterday to blood all over the coop. I'm using Corid, which has the same ingredient as Amprol (amprolium). I got it at Tractor Supply in the cattle section. It isn't labeled for poultry, but it's the same thing as Amprol. This was a really helpful thread that explains how to figure out the dosage:

When I was looking up how to treat her I saw a lot of people say that if you can't get amprolium then try Sulmet. I think you have to order that one, but amazon has it.

I hope your chicks pull through!

Try another vet(most vets carry Amprol)i live in Manitoba and i went to a vet i had never been to before and asked for Amprol which they sold me,i purchased 500ml(you do not need entire bottle)this amount was for 10 birds and i still have over 1/2 bottle left. Did you speak to the vet or receptionist, often the receptionists are miserable.

Unfortunately in Canada we have to purchase almost all meds through a vet,b/c the Canadian Government is concerned we might drink it ourselves.

Question regarding Oxysol 62.5(oxytetracycline HCI)is an antibiotic used to treat certain diseases in poultry and is similar to tetracycline, but i am not sure if it will do anything for cocci due to cocci being parasitic and not bacterial.

Huh - didn't know that! Every government has it's annoying points, I guess. I have to say it was so nice to be able to run to TSC first thing in the morning - after opening up the coop and seeing all that blood (and panicking). Thirty minutes later I was back home and pouring medicated water down my girl's throat with a medicine dropper.

OP - so sorry! I know how awful it is to fear for a sick chick, but to have to deal with meds struggles with uncooperative vets is too much. I agree with ten chicks - go see another vet. If it were me I'd just keep driving to every vet in town until I found one who would sell Amprol. Maybe put your sick chick in a dog crate and take her with you? Or, gross as this is, take the bloody litter to show them? If I were the receptionist and someone plopped down a plastic bag of full of bloody chicken litter on my counter I'd give them whatever they wanted!

Oops - just saw the bit about it being a holiday. I'm so sorry for what you're going through! Maybe more experienced folks will know what to do to help tide your girls over until you can get to another vet?

Oxytetracycline can treat cocci according to this link at the bottom of page from Mercks Manual, so you could start it, and try phoning that same vet's office tomorrow to get the amprollium.
