Hi I am hoping someone can help us. Our 1 year old Blue Lace Wyandotte Hen is acting somewhat strangely. She has been on the nest quite a bit and laying. Today, even though the pen door was open to allow free ranging, she was in the pen with one of our Reds. Poppy (the Wyandotte) is making odd sounds and acting very skittish. Raising her wings and pecking under them and fluffing out her body. She is not exiting the pen. The noises are very odd, not solid chicken like sounds, but more constant. Any thoughts?

Sounds like she's 'pre-broody'.

There are the signs I look for......that clucking is key IMO.
Is she on nest most the day and all night?
When you pull her out of nest and put her on the ground, does she flatten right back out into a fluffy screeching pancake?
Does she walk around making a low cluckcluckcluckcluckcluck(ticking bomb) sound on her way back to the nest?
If so, then she is probably broody and you'll have to decide how to manage it.
