A feed store near me is getting in blue laced Wyandottes tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone on here had any or just Wyandottes in general that they could tell me about. I have chickens mostly for eggs and as pets if that matters. I currently have 2 Ameraucanas, 1 Brahma, and 1 Cochin.

BLRW are pretty birds that have average to poor production and are prone to going broody. I find them mild in personality compared to the gold laced, and are even tempered. I always keep a few of the hens.

Gold laced Wyandotte seem to have the best production followed by silver laced. The blue laced aren't so productive, but are good to look at.

Is there anything I can do to prevent my hens from going broody besides collecting the eggs as soon as they lay them?

Unfortunately no. In many breeds the instinct to go broody has been bred out, but some still retain the instinct. I personally haven't had a gold laced, nor a silver laced go broody, but my blue laced routinely go broody. The breeders focus more on the coloring, so egg production isn't something that is selected for, nor do they try to breed the broody out. If egg production is important pick a different variety of Wyandotte. Blue laced are bums in that department.
