If I crossed a Blue Orp roo and a SS hen, then recrossed some of the offspring with the roo, would it be possible? I think that would be so pretty!

Yes,but you may have to hatch a lot of chicks. You will also get may other interesting patterns & colours,

Cool. I'd love to see your results, also. My girls aren't even laying yet, so it's going to be a while.

Sounds cool! I've been trying to figure out something interesting to do with my Speckled Sussex- but I can't figure out waht they are on the chicken calculator. Are they considered spangled?

It is possible, but not by crossing the offspring back to the blue roo. You would have to take a son back to speckled hens or cross sibling offspring to get there. Good luck. It sounds like a fun project.

Cool, thanks for the advice!

HappyMtn, I don't think they are considered spangled (think spangles are black spots). The closest I came up on the chicken calculator is red mottled. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. If it's not painfully obvious, I am not much of a geneticist. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I agree with hinkjc about crossing the offspring back to the pure hens instead of the roo. Also it would be better to use a splash roo in the first cross, your offspring should be all blues(with the spangled Sussex pattern) and with no blacks and you would have more blues to choose from to breed back. You would have to breed blue/spangled males back to pure Sussex hens for several generations to get back to the Sussex.
Be sure to keep us posted on your progress.

Mille Fleur,Motled,Speckled are colors developed from motled gene and others.Spangled is on Patern gene base.
