I have two Buff Orpington chicks that are three weeks old. One of them looks slightly different and has a huge comb compared to any other chick that I had/have. Does any one know if this is standard for a BO, did I get the switch a roo, or could he/she be ill?

I will have a pic posted later today.

Here is My Brown Leghorn Rooster at four weeks...

Is your chick anything like this?

Id so, you have a Rooster.
Glad i could help

I don't know why a large comb would mean it's ill? Don't worry about that! I bet it's a rooster. My BO rooster had a huge comb from early on, and the pullets have nothing but tiny pale/yellow ridges where the comb will be.

I had a Silver Wyandotte chick that developed a red comb starting at about 2 weeks. He was obviously different than his brooder mates and I am sure he was a roo. The man at the feed store where I buy my chicks took him back and replaced him with a beautiful Gold Wyandotte chick. Of course, we couldn't have just one, so I bought another one. That is why I have 31 chickens instead of 30.

Thanks for all your responses! I feared that she was in fact a he.

He does look like your leghorn. Now I recall, when I got my chick from the hatcher she also had leghorns. I'm assuming I got one. I said he might be ill, because this is the only one out of my nine chickens with such a large comb.

As promised
