I have read the sexlink sticky and I still have a question...... I do not quite understand.

What rooster do I need to get to be able to sex link chicks from my BO or RIR or BA?

Does anyone have this figured out?

Thank you very much for any and all help!

If the breeds you listed are your hens, you can't make Sexlinks with any of them regardless of what rooster you have.

If you have roosters of those breeds, you can breed any of them with Barred Rock hens to make black Sexlinks.

And you can breed BO and RIR roos with hens that have silver genes to make red sexlinks. Possible hens could be RIWs, Delawares, Columbian Colored hens, Silver Penciled hens, Silver laced hens, etc..

Breeds like White Rocks and White Wyandottes wouldn't be good to use as hens for Red Sexlinks because you can't can't always tell what color they are masking under the white and they may not have silver genes. White Leghorns are not a good choice either because most of them are Dominant white and would give all white chicks.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can get SL's from any of those you mentioned as hens. You need a red male(RIR, NH) over a Barred Rock to get a Black SL, and a red male over a white female w/ silver genetics(Delaware, White Rock, White Leghorn) to get a Red SL. I think a red male over a Rhode Island White gives you a Gold SL.

I believe you could use a B.A. roo over the hens I mentioned, but I don't think it's a popular option. I don't think B.O. male or female would work.

So get yourself a RIR roo and some Barred Rock hens & Delaware hens. You'll have all kind of sex links.

Rareroo beat me, I see

LOL yep.

Let me add a bit more to explain in a nutshell what the sticky says.

For Black Sexlinks, you must have Barred or Cuckoo hens with any color rooster as long as he is NOT Barred. White breeds aren't good to use as roos either unless you know their genetics because some may be masking barring under the white or be carrying Dominant White. I have used Red and Buff roos to make BLSs but any other color like Partrigde, Black, Blue, Laced, Patterned, etc will work.

For Red Sexlinks, you must have a roo with gold genes, ( RIR, NHR, BO, Partridge, Golden laced, etc...) on hens with silver genes.
Using hens like Delawares and Columbian based birds will give Red Sexlink hens that red with black tails like RIRs. Using RIW hens will give red/gold hens with white tails.
