Hi! First time letting hen lay on eggs. Has anyone else boarded off part of their coop for a laying hen? I have a broody hen and decided just to let her lay and see if any are fertilized eggs develop. She’s low on the pecking pole in our coop and I noticed she is getting red above her beak I assume from pecking at other chickens? I just want her to lay in peace but don’t have a good alternative coop for her. Today I boarded her off. This picture is taken from the back door that swings open. I just put food in there too because she doesn’t seem to be getting off the eggs much at all and she acted starving. It’s been 7 days since I started marking eggs ( Rhode Island Red eggs, not even her eggs) with that dark shell can you see development this early? Oh and again thanks! I’ve had the greatest help on this page. I feel pretty clueless about all this

Many peeps do just what you are doing. Section off an area, to keep her in a quiet zone. When chicks arrive, it is also good to keep other chicken out as well. Low on the pecking order has no bearing on chickens ability to successfully brood and hatch out chicks.
Keep offering feed and water for her since, determined broodies choose job over food.
Candle at day 8 or so. The brown egg shell should be able to be candled with a strong enough light in darkened surroundings.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,, :highfive:
