ok one of my hens died about an hour ago due to a bone (not too sure which bone) that had some how ripped through the lower part of the chest. It wasn't pleasant. I'm just wondering what could of caused it? would it happen if it fell off it's perch or if another hen or the male was bullying it because i don't want it happening to my other hens and want to prevent injury. there is no way that a cat or any preditor could get to it and i check on them every few hours as i have a few young. It was fine until about 4 o'clock when i saw t oit'so huddled in the corner with the injury. tried everything so called a vet that put her t sleep as he couldn't fix her. any surrgestions on what could have caused it so i can protet the others or is it an unexplainable????

Giving you a bump.. Not sure what could have cause it.. it very well may have been that she fell off the roost the wrong way.. For a compound fracture (which is what is sounds like from your description) to occur, there has to be some type of impact.. I don't think a roo or another hen could possibly do this, although I may be wrong.. Was there any chance someone, maybe a small child, could have been in with the hens and kicked her? I dunno, just trying to help you figure it out...

he said it was a compound fracture but can't spellthe bone name sorry i'm new to this thanks for the help i think the perch is too high and thats what happened but i just wanted to make sure that it was something like that so that i can preent it rehappening. thanks again. i just found it puzzling as the perch is about a fot off the floor not that high really so i may lower it so it's only just off the ground thanks.

oh and nothere are no small childre arnd i am the only person that goes inside their pen so it either hurt itself or another did. I was upset when we had to put her down sh was my favourate young one always happy to sit near me and on my lap. thanks again. han

thats what we thought it was fine and healthy for quite a few weeks though the perch did fall a few days ago and the chickens can fly so could it of fell roughly from flying? i'm trying to reach a plausable conclusion as i'm worried about this happening again. these chickens are like my children and this one's death shook me up. thanks for the help are there any other plausable explanations? han

I am amazed the vet couldn't help with at least some intelligent conjecture.

Tell us what breed and how old they are. You say you have a roo. Is he a lot bigger than the hens? Tell us what you fed them.

I agree, a fall of one foot is not going to do this. Did the vet ook for a bone disease?

See if you can find out the name of the bone.

the bone was the keel/sternum. and there was no blood or anything. it started acting strange like yesturday tho like not eatin and drinkig so i kept a close eye on it and this morning i noticed the bone when i picked it up for closer expection. the breed itself i am researching as it i still young it's hard to work out it had a light brown head but black body with yellow beak and feet. we have another one like it but with blue/grey feet which broke it'slegs a few weeks ago but we splinted it and badaged it and nursed it back to health.to be honest i'd never used this vet before and he was quite breif and told me that it was a compound fracture and the cicken would have to be put to down basically and so he did. he didn't look for a bone disease. could this be a bone disease through the breed?
