Hi, my name is Maximilien and I'm from Belgium.
I am fairly new to chickens and am learning the hard way (learned a lot from BYC but only joined now) I've gotten my first chickens approximately one year and a half ago, unfortunately they ended up becoming a meal to one of the dozens of foxes living around my house. Half my parcel is wooded area and woods all around so I see them all the time. Free-ranging is out of the question for me. My second "batch" of chickens came with a sick rooster that contaminated all my hens with Mycoplasma gallinarium, unfortunately I did not notice it directly as the seller, a professional, (so my guard was low) went into another room to get him for me before I could really observe him. After months of trying to heal what I thought was a severe cold I had to become a slaughterhouse worker and cull all my 26 birds, it was very hard to start as I had no experience. I had to start with my favourite (the rooster... which needed the most care) to get me going. I hope I did not make them suffer too much.
After this experience I decided I would never buy started chickens again (apart from maybe one seller I have had really good experiences with and seen the conditions in which he raises and sell his chickens) and would incubate eggs and raise the chicks myself. I have several races in different pens , Bresses , Cochins and Chabo, different colours of leghorns, australorp, industrial brown layers, brahmas, Ayam Cemani, bantam orpingtons , bantam australorps, bantam leghorn ...
I love the idea of being able to produce part of the food I consume everyday and find the chickens to be really agreables animals, my objective would be to be able to have the bantams being broody over the eggs of my other flocks so I can keep the bloodlines and see if I can get chickens more resistant to te difficult conditions of Belgium ; cold, rainy and humid most of the time then warm with no rain.
I used to play a lot of sports and (too much) video games, both activities I do not have time to do much of anymore since I am gardening so much, as well as being an amateur logger in my wood, and raising these chickens and my ducks and quails of course.
I also have 4 cats born on the property that help me with pest control (they are scaringly effective killing machines) and two very good long-haired weimaraners that are a tiny bit too interested in the chickens to my taste.
I've found out about BYC after starting to look for answers in english to my questions as I could not find much in french.
