Just thought I'd share my new brooders/grow out boxes that I got from a friends work. They are about 9ft long, just under 4 foot wide and tall. They came with the two cross braces and a top, and the bottom is basically a pallet of the same dimensions only the boards are butted up nest to each other. The price was almost free so:woot I think I have more time taking them apart and putting them back together than Money and I know I couldn't buy the wood for half of one that I paid for the pair:)

Just hang a feeder, waterer, and a heat lamp and its good to go:thumbsup

I guess we had the same idea . My new washer and dryer were delivered in these boxes . I put the boxes together and placed it out in my den . The chicks ( GLWs and Specked Sussex ) are very happy with all the room . My husband even put roosts in there for them . I can't say these boxes were free tho .

I used a washing machine box for my pheasants, at two weeks they could fly up to the ceiling in the basement. After chasing them around and putting them back in the box, I noticed one was missing. There was only five to start with. The other had found it's way into the sump pump hole, and drowned. I got some free fiberglass screen from the local hardware store to use as a cover, that kept them in.

Great minds!

I did something similar. Recently moved so we have lots of boxes. Just blogged about it at http://vikkisverandah.blogspot.com/2011/02/cheapo-chicken-brooder-coop.html ... gives explanation. I even cut windows in the boxes, and duct-taped window-screening on them so the birds will stay put. Connected the boxes with plastic zip-ties.

Have another set of boxes to put together by Monday. I just love making things that are very cheap!

Thanks!

I wanted a way to look in at them through across the room. I like it when I'm in the kitchen and I can see little black fuzzies moving around. We had about a half a roll of window screening left from redoing screens at our last house, so more than enough for any projects I have! And duct tape ... well, need I say more!
