Hello,
I have two 13 week old buff orpingtons, and can't tell if one of them is a boy or girl....Spud, the one with the pink crown, I assume is a girl. But Nugget has a red crown, which shows signs of being a boy, but it's smaller than the crowns of other baby rooster orpingtons. Nugget it also easier to catch, lighter, and more friendly than spud, and I was told it's a girl when I bought her. Thoughts?

Thanks

Well one of them is definitely a pullet. The one with the comb is iffy to me, because the posture and feathering appear kinda like a male. Are it's neck feathers pointed? Does it shake it's neck and fluff them up when you come around? (It kinda looks like it may have done that recently in a couple of the pics).

One thing that catches my eye is that makes always seem to have their head up and neck rather straight, whereas females usually keep their necks retracted. Obviously this is not a fool proof way to tell, just a hunch, and the pictures could be deceiving. I have a hard time telling BO's because unlike most breeds, they are the same color as the hens, even in the neck and wings.

Actually a weird thing was that it doesn't ever fluff up its feathers but the pullet does all the time. Thanks for the comment
