BR boy or girl?? and Pekin ducks??

I have 27 chickens. 14 are hens, one is a rooster (so far... lol) and 12 of them are my meat birds and are destined for 'freezer camp' mid-september.

Just curious what is the 'right' number of hens for a rooster?? Will he be ok with a harem of 14 ladies?? I wonder what we should name him?? We never really expected to have a rooster in the mix. hehe.

The recommendation, generally to ensure fertilization of all eggs in the flock, is one rooster for every 10 hens. Less than that, the roo may "over-mate" some and make them bare-backed. So you're okay with 14.

Roosters are really nifty to have in a flock. I name according to some arcane ritual which includes what kind of personality develops. Well, usually I name companion animals that way... with my EE rooster, Carl, he was SUPPOSED to be a pullet, named Carly in honor of my sister who died a week before I got that batch of chicks.

It was easy to drop the Y and just call him Carl.

They are definitely Pekin ducks. They are domestic ducks which were originally bred for food : (
They will not hatch their own eggs due to breed/domestication. I have raised pekins for 30 years.
do you know if they are m/f ? They will still do the "act" even if they are both female, seen it! LOL
I wish i could find a full grown, tame pekin...my 11 year old bird finally gave out and her buddy, a magpie duck is so lonely.
