Hi everyone,

I have a Brahma that has been having some issues that I am unsure of how to treat so I'm hoping someone can help.

A little back story first....last week a Brahma (Mauve) died. I thought she was moulting. It started a couple of months ago. She was losing feathers, not laying eggs, had some diarrhea, however, she ate, drank water and free ranged all day with the flock. Her crop always appeared full so I just thought it was moulting. I gave her extra protein with some plain scrambled eggs. I put ACV in their water. Then she started losing weight but her crop was full. I didn't know what to do. Was it worms? Was it sour crop? Was it just moulting - I didn't think that by that point. Then she just died. 😭

So around a month and a half ago my other Brahma (Butta) starting losing her feathers so I thought she was moulting as well - "like Mauve." She is still losing feathers as of today. About 2 weeks ago she had super watery poop. Today when I checked it wasn't as watery but it's still not solid. Her tail feathers are stringy (see pictures). I checked her crop this morning and it was completely empty so that's good right? Is this worms? Is this moulting? Is this sour crop (though wouldn't her crop be full and/or hard?) She hasn't lost weight - that's the only difference between her and Mauve. She eats, drinks, and free ranges all day. No eggs. Any ideas? I have hand raised them all since chicks. Butta was from my very first batch of chicks I ever got (April 2020). I do not want to lose her but not sure what I'm treating.

Peg

Looks like she has a couple of tail feathers that haven't come out yet during molt.

If she's eating/drinking, has no lice/mites, her crop is emptying overnight, then I would just give her time to finish molting.
Most hens in molt stop producing eggs.
