Hi Everyone,

I'm a first time chicken owner from Ireland. I've been lurking here for a while and have learnt so much from everyone whilst preparing for my hens' arrival! I finally got them a week ago and they're called Salt (a Light Sussex), Pepper (what i think is a Barred Plymouth Rock) and Squid (a Bluebell).

I also have 2 dogs who were quite interested in the hens at first, but were soon put in their place with a few sharp pecks. My 2 cats are really enjoying the new arrivals and can usually be found sitting on top of the run watching the hens, along with some of the other neighbourhood cats (the run is totally secure so I'm happy to let them sit and watch).

The ladies are settling in nicely to their new home and all but the Rock are laying well. I believe they start a bit later than other breeds so I'm not worried yet. I've started letting them free range around the garden in the evening which they really enjoy.

Anyway, I eventually decided to register so I could ask a question and thought I pop in here and introduce myself as well.

Welcome from TN. I actually get my 4 ladies today! Very excited. I use to raise hens about 25 years ago. They were all barred rocks. My new hens are Branhams I think.... I will post a picture layer. I did post a picture of my new coop my husband and I built.

you just need some 1/2 inch hardware cloth around the perimeter from ground to 2-3' up to keep predators from grabbing chickens parts and eating them off on the spot. Chicken wire only keeps in chickens, doesn't keep out anything
