Hello All,

I just joined BYC and am learning how to use this forum. I am brand new to poultry.

Three weeks ago, I got my flock. 10 assorted bantams, 10 grazer meat chicks, 1 white poult, 1 bronze poult, 6 keets, 2 African goslings and 3 white crested ducklings.

I have had three losses - one grazer I believe and 2 bantams. Have brought back ducklings from shaky legs with brewers yeast and now have my white poult with a broken or dislocated hip. I am in the middle of trying to figure out if I should continue with trying to help her with a spraddle leg tape job or to cull her. I have yet have have to cull anything.

My heart hurts every time I walk into the barn to where the brooders are to check on them. My breath catches and I do a quick head count. I am/was so looking forward to having beautiful birds to add to my homestead, fresh eggs and unadulterated meat this fall....but I swear these birds will be the death of me. So far I'm just discouraged and getting frustrated. *sigh*

Not much of an introduction as it's mostly negative and I am normally very positive person.....let's see if I can turn this around.

I am a city girl, gone country. I got married to my best friend almost 2 years ago on his step-fathers farm and we've just never left. We are working on being more self-sustainable and self-reliant. Some of you may know me from my FB page Stilettos to Cowboy Boots where I share my country experiences there.

We have two dogs, 3 cats and now these birds. Hoping to get goats once we get these birds under control.

Hmmmm.....that's it for now.....looking forward to meeting new people and learning heaps from you all.

E.

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry you are having a rough start. Sometimes it does go this way. I had a rocky start with my first quail and chickens with all kinds of illness and sickness, other issues. Seems like that first year I nearly regretted even getting into my poultry venture. But it eventually worked itself out. I learned TONS of things along the way and because I learned so much, when I look back, I am glad it all happened just as it did. Now that I have learned from my mistakes and all the fate that had come my way, I now have the knowledge to do things properly, I am a better steward to my flock and can handle all the ups and downs that come with keeping poultry. There will be good days and bad days. But your situation will settle down and before you know it, you will be enjoying all those fresh eggs and fun loving chickens. So hang in there. Lots of us know how you feel.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry you are having such a tough introduction to to poultry keeping. It does seem like sometimes the bad luck just piles up on you, really rough if it is in the beginning of your journey. Hopefully things will straighten out and the rest of the flock will do well and you will have lots of nice fresh eggs and happy birds from now on.

Sorry to hear about your struggles with your flock. Feel free to post questions on the forum and I'm sure you will get lots of help. There is a lot of valuable information on this site regarding poultry. Hang in there, as you learn from your mistakes and correct them, it will get easier.
