We’re brand new to chickens - we got our first two Silkies yesterday. They are a splash and a partridge two day (three today) old chicks, bought from a private breeder. We’re hoping they are pullets, but we understand that Silkies are difficult to sex, so we’re in the wait and see mode.
During all my pre-chicken research, I came across this site repeatedly. I’m looking forward to joining the community and using this resource - it looks fantastic.
Our family currently consists of my husband, a 2.5 year old little girl, and four indoor only cats. And I guess two chicks. I grew up on a small horse farm and have raised goats and cows as well, but never chickens. We’ve also owned a hedgehog in the past (she passed from cancer 6 years ago), so I guess I love having unusual pets.
We live in a city, so our chicks will be more urban. Our city has what appears to be crazy laws regarding chickens - they are allowed, but you have to have 25 square feet per chicken in your run. This is why we started with only two chicks. I couldn’t find a coop with that much run space. I do have a 50 square foot dog kennel for when my mom visits with her dog that I’m going to add hardware mesh to. We plan on using the dog run as a chicken tractor. We also have a coop I just put together for when the chicks are ready to go into that in a few weeks.
I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can to care for our sweet chicks!
