First I just want to thank everyone for the amazing wealth of knowledge possessed on this site. I have learned so much!
My intentions for keeping chickens are for eggs, composting, and as garden companions...as well as just all around being my beloved pets.
After 10 years of talking about chickens, learning about them, and loving them from a distance, I finally decided it was time to jump in. My sister has chickens and I enjoy being with them so much. Almost 2 weeks ago I got 5 chicks and I am almost entirely certain that one of them is a rooster based on the adage about tail feathers in 1 week old chicks. I am not really excited about having a rooster as I don't want to any babies, but I will try my best to make him a good boy and an asset to my flock. He is a Jersey Giant and 2 of the babies are Olive Eggers so I'm concerned he will be huge and accidentally injure them, but only time will tell...maybe it's not a rooster afterall. I hope to look back at this post in a year and laugh about how everything turned out just fine, so this is a bit of a diary post.
Anyways, very excited to be here!
