So our feral hen went broody and 1 of 3 eggs hatched. The chick that lived for 2 days is no longer with us. She usually nests high in our trees but is occupying a nestbox. I do not want her to have new eggs right now as her comb looks way to pale for my taste. Has anyone had a similar circumstance?

We only gave her fertile eggs as she was impossible to break in our broody prison complex. It is horrible to us to think of putting her in prison that is the only solution I can think of. Oh well we have her in prison now with chick starter to get her healthy again.

@TropicalBabies have any of your feral hens gone broody? Advice is seriously welcome. She is trying to brood more eggs. Today she collected three more.
Oh yes! Mine are terrible... I finally learned to just go with it. Have you tried breaking her? Mine did break easy so that was nice.
*** so just looked up at original post. Some people dunk their butts in cool water. I'd def do Nutra drench and scrambled eggs. I give my girls cooked meat too and papaya when they look down. Gets their appetite started

Sounds like a plan we can get behind. Thank you for your input.
I also heard of someone putting a cold pack in the nest box lol. I dont think i will do a wild child again if I can help it. They just do their own thing...
Oh, the last two nests my wild girls made were two neighbors over because I kept finding their nests, they kept moving farther away... oh boy.

Usually the feral hens break easy as they hate being handled. I am considering the ice block break method. But I am worried with her nutrition first and foremost. Her comb and wattles are a pale pink vs rosy red. She was so easy to break last year.

Still a mango/papaya is easy to obtain and we will give that a go. Plus cat food our chicken like the soft kind. I should probably just buy her a cantelope chicken cant resist those. Those juicy seedy pulp insides!

so my plan is to try and feed her out of it, then to freeze her out. I just do not like touching the ferals. They get along fine without us and don't need our help much.
