My chicken was making wheezing noises a few weeks ago and I brought her to the vet. The vet said that she had pneumonia and gave me antibiotics. I have used up all the antibiotics and it seems as if she is still having difficulty breathing. On top of which, I have noticed that she seems to drink water willingly but usually ends up just flicking her beak and getting water everywhere instead of actually letting it go down her throat. (or is this a normal behavior that other people see in their chickens? ) I did notice that for the past two days she would make a clicking noise with her beak after eating. Not sure if that is a cause for concern. She also sneezes from time to time.
she still eats a lot and "drinks" a lot and sleeps normally. she is active and able to run and play. It is just her breathing and the weird drinking. She poops normal as well. Although lately I've noticed that her poop is extra smelly. usually it is smelly only when it is the cecal poop but i feel like she farts while pooping because i can smell it from a distance.
although two days ago she experienced a very strange episode. i found her on the floor making loud breathing noises. her mouth was cracked open and saliva (i heard that chickens don't drool though so technically it is her barfing) was coming out. her whole body would convulse and then it would look like she was trying to get something out at the same time. her eyes started closing and it felt like she was extremely weak and at that point, i honestly though i was going to lose her. i was on the way to the emergency vet's and then noticed that she was acting normal again and made sure that everything was okay before i turned around back home. she has not had an episode like that since. i think she may have eaten one of those pine shavings because i tried a new brand which made pine shavings that seemed to be less dusty but were unfortunately a lot harder and pricklier. i have switched back to a softer pine shaving since then.
I don't want to really return to the vet because she seemed unwilling to show me the x-rays she took that led her to the diagnosis and i just didn't feel like she was really trustworthy overall.
does anybody have any suggestions on what to do or what it could be? i don't know whether i should be making the temperature cooler or warmer for her in order for her to have an easier time breathing.she doesn't breathe with her mouth open, only slightly open. but i can hear her wheezing noises.
