I got a variety that could include anything Meyer Hatchery sells and am curious about breed and sex. They were six weeks old on Monday. I'll take my best guess at it (which isn't very good) and I'd love to see if y'all agree or not. This is another post to follow up one from the other day.

Chicken 4 (2 pictures) - White Leghorn Cockerel? He's a bit small. I think the dark spots are dirt, but he's also flighty so I didn't chase him too much.

Chicken 5 - Probable hen. White Dorking? Seems big for a bantam? (Also, I don't recall seeing any chicks with 5 toes so probably not a Dorking. But those feet aren't yellow like I see on other breeds).

Chicken 6 - Probable Austra White? Pullet? We had one white chick with a black dot on its back. I think this might be it.

Chicken 7 - Actually, now that I have pictures up on my laptop, I think this is Chicken 6. Or is the comb different?

I'm wary of the "assortments" so I like to order specifically what I want. Have you tried sexing your chicks using the wing feather method? I used that the first time we brought home some fluffers and was surprisingly accurate. It only works while they're still fluffy though.

Yeah, availability was very limited in December and I'd like to start getting a few eggs and some chicken in the freezer before it gets really hot here in Texas. I did hedge my bets a bit with the Ancona and Silver Laced Wyandotte hens you see in the background.

I understand that. I still haven't plunged in to ordering direct from the seller (still buy at TSC and Atwoods), but I'm edging that direction. When we hit Chick Days in a couple of weeks I'm going to call every store around to figure out what they have and then I'm going to spend my shipping money on gas. LOL

Yeah, I'm trying to convince myself not to start doing chicken math. I might not buy any more on Chick Days. Might.
