Hello folks,

I am chicken-sitting a neglected hen. Unsure if she will stay or not. There is a potential home lined up if the integration doesn't go well with my flock.

1. Where did you get the bird?
Mother of the previous owner. Daughter moved out on undesirsble terms and her mom wasn't knowledgeable to care for her.

2. Are they from a feed store, hatchery, or breeder?
Most likely, a feed store. Not 100% sure. Daughter and mom don't know or remember.

I suspect Leghorn by the example photos posted for each breed in the other thread but am not sure. I am not well versed in differences between breeds.

I am also including a picture of her legs/feet. It's a desert climate so I know they are going to look dry but if anything seems out of sorts aside from that, please let me know.

Thank you in advance for your help.

C.A.

Additional photos. And she laid a small whote egg today. I suspect her growth maybe stunted. Unless her breed has small comb. But compared to my others (barred rock), the ear area looks not fully deceloped yet.

Interesting, when I looked at her at first I thought she was young, but this in combination with the possible scaly leg mites (which I don't believe are super common in young pullets) make me think she is fully mature. Perhaps she's just a small breed or stunted like you've said. Maybe someone will come along and know what breed or mix she might be.

After more research, I believe she is a young Exchequer Leghorn hen. She appears to have the split wattle. I believe the initial age estimate of 1yr+ is not accurate. My estimate is 5-6 months; just a slightly late bloomer. She laid 2 small white eggs this week.

Our very dry climate is mostly likely the reasons for the scaly legs which my other chicks also show signs of.

She's definitely a mixed breed. Her coloring is all over the place and not something you would see in a pure breed. There's barring, spangling and perhaps lacing. Her leg color is white, so she could be an old English game bantam cross, or maybe a Sussex cross. Those are just guesses.
