Hi All

I have an 8 week old little cockerel that I just have no idea what breed he is. The woman I got him from (as a day old chick) said he was a sumatra, but he isn't and I'm pretty sure he isn't crossed with one. She said she had no mixed pens and all her chicks are pure. She isn't returning phone calls or texts, so she is of no help.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated ! Thanks!

I am not an expert with Sumatras but I just looked them up online and it seems to me that this birds comb and body type resembles the Sumatra. His color is not reconized so it is hard to tell for sure. But if I was to guess, I think that the lady you got him from is working on some sort of dun/buff/chocolate Sumatra.

Then again, I am not an expert, so I could be wrong.

Thank you Local. I've done a lot of research on the sumatras and black is the only recognized color but they also come in blue and white. He has greenish gray legs and his toes are yellow. The comb looks about right but that's really about it to me. I thought he was a pullet up until a few days ago when he crowed. I also have a Polish cockerel the same age that crowed at 7 weeks (almost a week and a half ago), so I suppose this guy figured he didn't want to be outdone. If he is part sumatra, I'd assume he'd still get the long saddle feathers. So that may be a tell tale sign in a few more months. I'm still curious as to what others think though.

I just hate that the breeder told me to "call with any questions or concerns since the chicks are so special to me, so don't hesitate!" I have tried a few times and have heard nothing. Really frustrating when people don't follow through.

I am right their with ya! I emailed this guy that I bought some of my bantams from almost a week ago and have never heard from him! It really is frustrating!

I hope you figure out what your cock is. He is really cute no matter the breed!

Thank you everyone who responded. I was going back and forth about whether to keep him or not. From the replies it seems like he may actually be mostly sumatra and if so, he may be quite a looker (if not totally pure or recongized) when he matures and those saddle feathers come in. I will most likely hang on to him and maybe get some females and put them in their own pen since I already have a roo from this batch of chicks.
