Texas Hill Country!
hello all you wonderful breeders out there! When I started with chickens last year "show quality" was the last thing on my mind but since my son joined 4-h this has become something important to us. I also never thought I would consider "culling" the problem is, if I have a chick that is not show quality but has no health issues. I can't bring myself to kill it. The other problem is, I can't afford to keep feeding it either if it's gonna lay tiny eggs or is a male. Is there anyone out there that doesn't kill-cull? what do you do with your culls? sell or give them away? Thanks!

I either give em away or sale em at the small animal auctions....Culling doesnt allways mean killing em....

Yep, sell or give away. Sometimes one person's cull is another person's dream.

Also, if I have hens who just don't make the grade. . . I never "cull" them in that manner, I just don't breed them. I always keep my extra hens and pullets for laying.

People like me who do not show chickens would LOVE the opportunity to buy culled birds. The culled birds from good breeders are usually closer to standard than those sold by hatcheries, and they have already been raised, saving the time and trouble of raising chicks.

ok then! well I have a baby jab I already know is not good for breeding or show b/c it's legs are to long and it has 2 crooked toes. (which I am trying to correct)

I don't want to cross it back in to the breeding pool with the long legs and end up with more long legged chicks. Thanks for responding!

Sometimes peoples "culls" are still outstanding show birds! I find that so interesting. Your getting rid of a bird with no problems, but to them its like OMGoodness! I just think its funny. I'm the president of the poultry club in our county so I sell to fellow 4H'ers

for roosters, eat them or dog tucker... anything not worth breeding is not worth selling, not going to do the breed any favour by selling lesser birds.

Hens are different story, either sold as layers or broodies for pheasants or other birds.

eat extra boys! and sell extra "culled" pullets at local swaps or on the usedeverywhere site, which are then generally used as pets/layers not for breeding purposes.
