Chirping
So, our tiny homesteads' waltz back into the chicken world is off to a rough start. We bought six pullets and 5 are boys. We've come to terms, and a bachelor pad is under way.
We have our one precious D'uccle hen. I've had chickens previously for years, but only bred chickens who were at least a couple years old.
Supposedly chickens can become mommas as soon as they lay, but would it be better to wait? It's already June and she won't start laying for at least a couple months. We really want to match her with our best rooster and get some hens out of the deal, but don't want to rush her if it'll tax her too much or if it'd be better to wait till next spring. Feed stores aren't selling chicks, buying online is absurd (its either buy at least 25 or pay 80 in shipping and no one in our area is jumping at a swap or sell).
Thoughts? Tips?
