Hi there,

I was wondering if I could pick someones brain for a little advice about breeding guineas before I get ahead of myself.

If I order 20 birds, how do I house them so I can get them to breed comfortably? Please keep in mind i can't let them run free range as we have too many predators.

Would i have to house them by……….
Separating each pair as I have seem them do naturally in the wild?
Putting them in an enclosure big enough to hold 1 male to a handful of females?
Having however many males to females in one giant enclosure?

I hope to hear from someone soon.

You might want to check out Ralph Winter's Guinea Farm.

Any of the scenarios that you describe could be used as long as sufficient space is available. If you want to control which guinea mates with which guinea, then you would house them in pairs or multiple hens to each cock. If you don't care about who is breeding who, you could house them all in a single large pen.

Some people prefer to keep a hen to cock ratio of 1 hen to 1 cock while others prefer a ratio of up to 5 hens per 1 cock. Any of these scenarios can be used successfully. The key is to have enough space for each guinea. Crowding them too much will cause all kinds of conflict.
