Depending on how it's done, it can be referred to as "line-breeding".
It is very common, and IF done correctly, can be beneficial to your flock. I also think occasional "out-crossing" is recommended in order to preserve the "vigor" of your flock.

I'm CERTAINLY no "expert". This is purely from what I've read.
