I bought Storey's guide to raising ducks today and found out that I am apparently not feeding my ducklings right. I have them on 20% protein starter (non-medicated) but haven't given them grit or brewer's yeast. Can anyone tell me how much yeast to give per day and the best method (food, water, etc.) I bought 1 lb. of powdered brewer's yeast and I have 25 ducklings. Also, do I just sprinkle some grit on their food or what? Oh, I got my brewer's yeast for $9.98 from amazon.com, that was with shipping, is there a cheaper way to get it?

I've not used the brewer's yeast, but I think you can just sprinkle it on their food--I don't think it's possible to overdose. The grit should be offered separately, so they can choose how much to eat. Mine forage during the day in an outdoor pen, so they get their grit from the environment, and seem to do fine that way.

Have fun.

Storey's Guide recommends that for ducklings, initially a sprinkle on the food is fine. Apparently some ducklings have been known to stuff themselves on grit and starve. Extreme case, but possible. Mine were a month old before they figured out that shavings weren't a food.

When they are older, grit free choice is recommended.

I have been putting, oh, a tablespoon or two per 12 cups of pellets. When they were wee little, I probably put a teaspoon in their six inch diameter feeder. Whenever I replenished it (with the food of course

Awesome question! I'm a newbie to ducklings too! From everything that I have been reading I thought they wouldn't need grit till a bit older. Hmm... I could be all wrong! Maybe try PMing Nettie she seems to have done ALOT of research on the diets for ducks. Or look under the "sticky" tab there is alot of info there too!'
