Hello all! Thanks for letting me join. We are getting a used coop today so I am in the planning stages of getting it off and running. Im sure i'll be posting a ton of questions but the first one is do you recommend we put the coop and the yard on bricks instead of the ground? we picked up some free paving bricks enough for this job. the coop itself is about 5 feet wide and 6 feet long. The yard will be about 4 to 6 feet long. thanks in advance

sorry for the confusion. I was thinking of having the floor out of brick where they would run around and then have straw on top of the bricks for them to scratch around on. having the coop as well as the run on bricks

Welcome to BYC! Not sure I understand your description either, but I wouldn't put wood touching the ground...and you would want to do something with the yard to prevent digging under by predators and by the chickens themselves....
Good luck!

Half my run is concrete, the other half is dirt. I can honestly say that I wish the whole thing was dirt, but enjoy the security from predators that I get from the concrete.
So the cons:
You have to clean it up at least every two weeks. On the dirt portion, I just keep adding straw, hay or pine shavings. They just turn it over and it decomposes on its own.
How are you going to secure your fencing to the brick?
More risk of bumble foot.
Pros:
My run was a dog run, so the concrete pad is surrounded by chain link (which I've reinforced) but the posts are sunk into concrete, and with the roof over that part is very secure.

Really, that's the only thing I can think of. Its easier to clean off, but again... with me, if it was dirt, I would just be putting more straw or whatever on top of the old.

Welcome to BYC, Julie!
I think a lot would depend on your climate. Bricks will hold heat if you are in a hot climate and feel cold in a cold one. But if you don't cement them in place you can take them up and change it out if you like. We would love pictures of your coop and birds!
